Grand Duke Octagonal Frame (1697)

Octagonal frame, cyma with ovoli, made of gilt wood with decorations, having a motif of small bunches of leaves, flowers and fruits. The cyma is composed of a shell surrounded by two volutes continuing with ribbons and leaves (160 x 115 cm width 28 cm).

The original frame encloses the painting known as Madonna con Bambino by Carlo Dolci, a gift offered by Grand Duke Cosimo III to his son, Gian Gastone, for his marriage. The majesty of the frame, made in 1697, is justified by the importance of the event for which it is meant. The original frame can be seen today in the chapel of the Quartiere delle Stoffe at Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy.
